The British governors-general spent much of their five-year terms being welcomed and farewelled. It could be exhausting. After promising to visit every borough during his term as governor-general, some 60-odd years earlier, Lord Ranfurly was dismayed to discover how small some were. However, as the guests in the background show, receptions provided a chance for locals to dress up.
