In the lead-up to the year 2000, the Reserve Bank printed more bank notes in case the change in date brought down computer systems (as was widely expected), and prompted a rush on banks for cash. This scenario did not play out and the bank shredded the surplus notes, which were then buried in a Wellington landfill. This is Reserve Bank chief currency manager Brian Lang with a handful of the shredded notes in 2000.
