Walkwise are Armourguard employees who work for the Wellington City Council. They provide a highly visible presence, less authoritative than a police officer or security guard, to help deter crimes against property such as graffiti and vandalism. They also report incidents to police. Around eight staff patrol the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The scheme, introduced in 2000, has proven to be so successful that Lower Hutt, Manukau, Dunedin and Porirua have adopted the same or similar models.
