Santa Claus hands out presents at Kimberley (formerly the Levin Training Centre), probably in the early 1970s. Many children with intellectual disabilities were sent to Kimberley in the North Island or Templeton Centre in the South Island at an early age. Often families lived far away, so occasions that would normally have been celebrated in the home became part of institutional life.
