Bishop Patrick Moran

The first Bishop of Dunedin, Irish-born Patrick Moran, arrived in 1871 and remained in the position until his death 24 years later. He has been described as a 'prodigiously energetic, relentlessly efficient and humourless' advocate for Catholic education and Irish nationalism. (Michael King, God's farthest outpost: a history of Catholics in New Zealand. Auckland: Viking, 1997, p. 96)
