Edmund Hillary is pictured with Herbert Sutcliffe, founder of the School of Radiant Living. In the late 1930s the Hillary family were members of the school, which taught physical, psychological and spiritual health. Hillary travelled to Gisborne in 1940 as Sutcliffe’s assistant, and trained to become a Radiant Living teacher, but later drifted away from the movement.
