Air Force trainee, 1944

Because of the family’s opposition to war, Edmund Hillary and his brother registered as conscientious objectors during the Second World War, but Ed later changed his mind and joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force. In 1944 he attended training camps in Marlborough and New Plymouth. Both were close to mountains and Hillary was able to indulge his passion for climbing in the weekends.
