Māori settlement, Ātene, Whanganui River

This photograph of Ātene from the late 1800s shows the basic housing typical in many rural Māori communities at that time. From the beginning of the 20th century a concerted effort was made by Māori and the government to improve housing conditions. However the level of effort and resourcing varied significantly over the century.
