This wooden cenotaph at Te Kōura marae, between Ōngarue and Taumarunui, was made by renowned carver Tene Waitere of Ngāti Tarāwhai as a memorial to those who died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. It is estimated this epidemic killed 5% of the Māori population.
