The ship or common rat (Rattus rattus) is one of the three rat species in New Zealand. Introduced by Europeans, it has decimated native birds and insects. A good tree-climber, it eats eggs, young birds and a wide range of native fruits and plants. The Department of Conservation has managed to eradicate this pest on some small offshore islands, allowing bird and animal life there to recover.
