Two of the greatest cultural go-betweens of the early 20th century are seen in this 1938 photograph. In the middle of the group on the right stands the Waikato leader Te Puea Hērangi, who led her people out of the decades of despair that had followed the wars of the 1860s. She resurrected the traditional home of the Māori king at Ngāruawahia and is seen here at the opening of its meeting house, Tūrongo. On the left stands a distinguished visitor, the East Coast leader Sir Apirana Ngata.
