A retirement village is a residential settlement comprising at least two dwellings, which provides housing and other services to retired people. Residents buy a right to occupy the dwelling for their lifetime, or until they move elsewhere. They live independently, but often have access to home help and health services. Home maintenance is carried out by the village owner (a regular fee is paid to cover this). Many villages also organise leisure and social activities, and have communal spaces like gardens, swimming pools and sports facilities. Some have rest homes and hospitals on the site.
