Colonial cities were characterised by mixed land uses. Factories, shops and houses were often neighbours, with both beneficial and detrimental consequences. Workers did not need to travel far to workplaces, but noises and smells from factories could irritate residents. This is the P. Hutson and Co. pottery and brick factory in the Wellington suburb of Newtown in 1895.
