Story: Food shops

Riccarton Mall, Christchurch

Riccarton Mall, Christchurch

The site of Riccarton Mall is shown here in the early 1960s, as the foundations were laid. By the 2000s the mall had expanded to fill the entire block. In 1965, when the mall opened, it housed a supermarket and shops. Shopping was done during the week and on Friday evenings, as most shops were not permitted to open over the weekend. The era of suburban supermarket shopping led to the end of many small food stores.
