Hero parade, Auckland, 1998

The most flamboyant expression of homosexual identity is Auckland’s annual Hero festival, which used to feature a parade. Openly gay people now occupy positions in all walks of life – including membership of Parliament and the Cabinet. But the issue of gay clergy continues to disrupt many church groups.
