
Lybia Huata, Allies Ormsby and Aroha Te Aho – all from Wairoa – listen to records in their central Wellington flat in 1961. In the 1960s many young people gave up the institutional confines of hostel life for the freedoms of flatting (shared-house accommodation). Initially, men and women did not flat together, but in the 1970s mixed flatting became common.
