Karen McNulty, a chalkie, records the change in the price of Brierley shares. The use of chalkies in place of the call-over system was introduced in the Wellington exchange in 1962. The companies were listed on a large board at one end of the room. Brokers would shout out prices and the chalkie, with chalk and duster at the ready, would rub out the old price and write in the new.
