Day walkers begin the Tongariro Crossing in the central North Island. The popularity of New Zealand with international tourists has led to crowding on some tramping tracks. The Milford, Kepler, Routeburn, Heaphy and Abel Tasman tracks in the South Island all have booking systems to ensure that everyone gets a bed at the huts.
