The Oratia Farmers’ Market in West Auckland opened in October 2007, about a decade after the first farmers’ markets in New Zealand. On opening day, stallholders sold fresh produce, bread, eggs, honey, chocolate, olive oil, muesli, fresh pasta, preserves, seafood, plants and flowers. The market showcased the best of local food and produce. The ingredients for Greg Flutey’s breads are not locally grown – but Farmers’ Markets New Zealand says that while 80% of produce on offer at registered farmers’ markets should be locally grown, 20% can have ingredients sourced from outside the region.
