Story: Food and beverage manufacturing

Sali Mahomet

Sali Mahomet

Known as ‘Ice-cream Charlie’, Sali Mahomet plied ice cream in Christchurch’s square from 1903 until 1942. His country of origin is not known, but it is thought he was not Indian. He is seen here in his ‘dairy’ – at the back of his property at Caledonian Road in St Albans. In a time before small-scale refrigeration, Sali purchased 45-kilogram blocks of ice from the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company to keep his ice cream chilled.
