The Tākitimu Mountains are the most prominent range in Southland. Regarded by Māori as the upturned hull of the Tākitimu canoe, the mountains are always snow-capped in winter and can be seen from most parts of the Southland plains. Spence Peak (1,634 metres) is the highest summit.
