Most male English immigrants in the 19th century were from the rural working class, and were either craft workers or rural labourers. Once in New Zealand their farm labouring skills were in demand. These men were gathering wheat into stooks (bundles of 10 sheaves) on a farm near Lincoln, Canterbury.
