This hitching post in Eltham, Taranaki, is a remnant of days gone by, when horses were tied up in the main street while their rider attended to business in town. A bridle can be looped through the ring and over a hook to provide a simple and secure tether. These days, many people would not know what it was, but it may still be used to tie up pet dogs.
