
Although permanent migration from England had declined by the end of the 20th century, there were still many who came as tourists or on working holidays. One of these was Alys Mendus, an archaeologist. Here, she unearths a piece of bone at Totara Estate in North Otago, the site where the first shipments of frozen meat for England were prepared in 1882.
