Tiritiri Matangi sanctuary

Tiritiri Matangi island was made an open bird sanctuary in 1971. Since then volunteers have planted tens of thousands of native trees to restore the habitat and encourage bird life, including this stand of hardy, fast-growing cabbage trees.
