Story: Coarse fish

Rudd

Rudd

Rudd can grow up to 40 centimetres long and weigh 2 kilograms. They have distinct red fins. They feed on insects, aquatic plants and fish, competing with native species for food and damaging native fish habitat. Rudd are classified as a ‘noxious species’ (except in the Auckland/Waikato fish and game region, where they are considered ‘sports fish’). They naturally occur throughout temperate western Europe, and were illegally brought to New Zealand in the 1960s. They are mainly found in Northland and in the Waikato River catchment.
