Two sambar deer (a large Asiatic species) were released near the Rangitīkei coast in 1875. Some were taken to Bay of Plenty in 1914, 1921 and 1924. There are two main areas where they occur in the wild in New Zealand – Manawatū and Bay of Plenty. Hunters report an annual harvest of 40–50 animals.
