Axis deer, which are native to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, were introduced to Goodwood Bush near Palmerston in 1867. By the mid-1890s they had been exterminated, as they damaged settlers’ crops. Other releases occurred on Kāpiti Island (1893), in Tongariro National Park (1907) and in Dusky Sound (1908). These releases were not a success and the species was probably extinct in New Zealand by 1920.
