Also know as summer lilac and butterfly bush, buddleia (Buddleja davidii) is one of the few exotic weeds found deep in the forest. It is a woody shrub up to 4 metres high. In early summer it produces scented mauve flowers with orange centres. Buddleia can tolerate a range of environments, and in the North Island it is often found growing in river beds in bush country. This specimen is being examined by botanist Graeme LaCock in the Pohangina valley, Manawatū.
