Red tussock

Red tussock

Red tussock (Chionochloa rubra) grassland dominates the lower slopes of Mt Ruapehu, at about 1,300 metres. The ice axe in the foreground provides a sense of scale for these large tussocks, which grow to 1 metre high. Red tussock occurs widely – from the North Island’s volcanic mountains southwards to North Canterbury.
