Story: Wellington region

Pacific migrants

Pacific migrants

Tokelauans Ario Galo and Saroa Lafu arrived in Wellington in January 1963 seeking jobs, and worked initially at the Public Service boys’ hostel in Oriental Bay. Labour shortages in the 1960s and 1970s spurred the migration of thousands of Pacific Island people to New Zealand. Many settled in Wellington.
