Story: European exploration

Caples valley

Caples valley

Those who explored the north and west of Lake Wakatipu usually followed river valleys and went over mountain passes. This view down the Caples valley towards Lake Wakatipu shows why river bottoms were a natural route. The valley takes its name from Patrick Caples, who explored it in early 1863.
