The alpine fern Grammitis poeppigiana usually grows in rock crevices in mountainous regions south of a line joining Mt Taranaki and the East Cape. In Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park it grows up to 2,600 metres altitude, higher than any other New Zealand fern. Beyond New Zealand, this fern can be found in Tasmania, Australia, South Africa, South America and many of the islands surrounding Antarctica.
