The advent of the musket had a dramatic effect on warfare in the Bay of Plenty, as elsewhere in New Zealand. The well-armed Ngāpuhi tribe from Northland made successful raids into the region because the local people did not have muskets. Once they too acquired guns they were better able to protect themselves, but also became interested in peacemaking because warfare made it harder to trade with Europeans.
