Te Ao Hou was founded by the Maori Affairs Department in 1952 to portray and promote modern Māori life to both Māori and a wider audience. The June 1963 issue featured a cover story on the Hi-Fives, a Māori showband who combined popular music, Māori culture and comedy into polished cabaret acts.
