Queen Elizabeth II Park, Christchurch

Queen Elizabeth II Park, Christchurch

This souvenir pennant depicting the Queen Elizabeth II Park Stadium and Sports Centre dates from the 1970s or 1980s. Queen Elizabeth II Park was constructed specifically for the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch. With a capacity of 25,000, it became a multi-sport venue used especially for athletics and swimming. The park was the site of the International Paralympic Committee World Championships in January 2011. However, less than one month later the facility was badly damaged in the 22 February earthquake and was subsequently demolished.
