Dorothy Simons, whose book on New Zealand sportswomen was published in 1982, was New Zealand's first distinguished woman sports journalist. Born in 1916, Dot Simons was a talented cricket and hockey player who married a New Zealand representative rugby league player. She began writing on women's sport for the Evening Post before the Second World War, then moved to Auckland, where her work for the Auckland Star established her reputation. Simons wrote a weekly column on women in sport, and covered golf and three Olympic Games. New Zealand's champion sportswomen included 26 profiles and featured the runner Allison Roe on the cover. Dot Simons died in 1996.
