In 1999 a young computer consultant, Sam Morgan, launched the Trade Me website, through which New Zealanders could buy and sell goods through online auctions. Reportedly Morgan had been spurred to action by his difficulty in buying a heater for his flat, and initially he started the site, with the first homepage shown here, from the same Wellington flat. The site grew remarkably, filling a niche occupied in many countries overseas by eBay, and added new sections such as car sales in 2003, property in 2005 and jobs in 2006. By 2014, the date of the second homepage shown here, Trade Me was the country's most popular New Zealand-based site.
