Wellington’s waterfront stadium – known to some as the ‘Cake Tin’ – opened in 2000 to replace the former rugby venue of Athletic Park. Rugby was first played at Athletic Park in 1896, and it was the site of some memorable games, including two All Black tests against France in cyclone-strength winds. The stadium is in a less exposed, more central position, and can seat more than 34,000 people.
Listen to a Roadside Story about the stadium. Roadside Stories is a series of audio guides to places around New Zealand.
