The Tekapo basin and Waitaki River, with eight hydro stations and about 50% of New Zealand’s hydroelectric storage, are critical to New Zealand’s electricity supply. The river and lake system is one of the most modified in the country, dotted with feeder canals, artificial or raised lakes, dams, and the power stations themselves.
