Invercargill and Southland’s smaller centres all grew steadily for the first three-quarters of the 20th century. The slowing rural economy from the mid-1970s affected the towns, but was less marked in Riverton/Aparima and Te Anau, which were also holiday and tourist centres. The buoyant Southland economy in the 2000s halted the decline of Invercargill.
