Story: Volcanic Plateau region

Volcanic Plateau vegetation

From around 1300 Māori cleared native forest on the Volcanic Plateau by burning. Most of the remaining areas of native bush are on the higher areas and southern faces of the ranges. There are also large areas of exotic forest plantations, especially on the Kāingaroa plateau.
