Story: Ecoregions

Southern limits of kauri and other plants

  • Kauri

Kauri grows naturally in the north of the North Island, and on the Coromandel Peninsula in lowland and hilly forests. It grows as far south as Pukenui, near Kāwhia, on the west coast, and Kaimai in the east.

  • Mangroves

Mangroves are coastal plants which grow naturally as far south as Kāwhia Harbour on the west coast and Ōhiwa Harbour on the east.

  • Pōhutukawa

Pōhutukawa grows naturally around the coastline to just north of Urenui on the west coast, and to Poverty Bay on the east, as well as inland around Lake Tāupo and the Rotorua lakes.

  • Pūriri

Pūriri is found naturally throughout the northern North Island becoming more confined to coastal areas as it reaches its southern limits at Cape Egmont on the west coast, and Māhia Peninsula on the east.

  • Nīkau

Nīkau grows naturally throughout lowland forests in the north of the North Island but is only found in coastal areas further south. It also grows along the north-west coast of the South Island, where its southern limit is near Ōkarito, and along the east coast as far south as Banks Peninsula.

  • Northern rātā

Northern rātā occurs naturally throughout the North Island, and in the north of the South Island, where it is found from Nelson westwards, and south to around Hokitika.

This interactive map allows you to reveal the natural range of some native plant species. As you travel southwards in New Zealand plants that prefer warmer temperatures or cannot withstand frosts reach their southern limits. (These are natural limits and some of these species can and are grown further south by planting in favourable sites.)

Mt Crawford, Mirimar, Wellington has a planted kauri [fence protected]. This trees history is unknown. probably about 80 yrs old. Probably due to isolation & root protection, this tree is very healthy. Tree possibly could have valuable genetic material due to its isolation. This may be helpful with die back studies. It's location is fairly dry.
