Total catch, 1920–2000

This figure illustrates how the total finfish landings in New Zealand boomed from the 1970s. This was mainly due to the discovery and exploitation of deep-water fisheries such as hoki during the 1980s and 1990s.

Note: the 2000 figure is for finfish exported. New Zealand domestic sales were not significant in comparison.
