In the baby-boomer years of the 1950s and 1960s, there was a surge in births. There was also an influx of young immigrants, who married and had children after arrival. By 1971, one-third of the population was under 15. More than 30 years on, the ‘bulge’ of the baby boomers has reappeared in the middle-aged group.
