These are the logos of some of the major free-to-air television channels and public radio stations in 2012. Public broadcasting in New Zealand developed out of state control, which began in 1936. In 1962 a government-appointed board, the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, gave state-funded radio and television some independence from direct government control. In 2012 state-funded broadcasters compete with private broadcasters for an audience.
