Story: Alternative health therapies

Hypnotherapy showman

Hypnotherapy showman

Hypnotherapy is as much associated with theatre and performance as with health. This 1957 poster advertises a performance in Christchurch by Escalante, the 'mass hypnotist'. It promises 'an exciting, outstanding stage attraction at commonsense prices' for the whole family. The photograph of a cigarette-smoke-enveloped Escalante seems ironic these days, because hypnotherapy is sometimes used to help people quit smoking.
