Maori girl

Maori girl

After 1945, rural Māori were drawn to cities by jobs and urban life. On arrival many faced racial discrimination. Noel Hilliard’s 1960 novel Maori girl portrayed the prejudice a young Māori woman experienced after moving from a village to Wellington. The book sparked controversy, as it challenged the notion that New Zealand was a tolerant society.
