This is the title page of the first issue of Te Toa Takitini, a Māori-language newspaper published in Hastings by Māori clergy of the Anglican Church from 1921 to 1932. It made important contributions to the growing field of Māori studies. At a time when whare wānanga, the traditional schools of orally transmitted Māori learning, were in decline, Te Toa Takitini published, and therefore preserved, ancient chants, legends and other examples of oral literature. This included a series of articles by Āpirana Ngata that collected traditional waiata, later published in book form as Ngā mōteatea.
