This issue of the School Journal was one of three that corrected misinformation about the Moriori people that had been published 94 years previously. The cover, which features the white hopo (albatross) feather that is symbolic of Moriori peace traditions, won a design award. The illustration depicts Moriori children escaping Rēkohu (the Chatham Islands) after the 1835 Māori invasion on a waka pahī (canoe) bound for the East Coast of New Zealand.
